11+
The 11+ exam is one of the most significant assessments a pupil will undertake; the results directly impact their future educational path. Most UK primary schools do not specifically prepare pupils for these exams, which are typically sat in September or January of Year 6. Furthermore, much of the 11+ mathematics content is drawn from the Year 6 national curriculum, with many independent schools setting papers that go well beyond these standards, making dedicated preparation essential.
Mr Armitage's online 11+ course is designed to bridge this gap through a comprehensive, structured approach:
Content Mastery: Ensuring all required National Curriculum content for Year 6 is taught well in advance of the exam. This also includes additional material not covered in the state curriculum, giving pupils a competitive edge.
Advanced Algebra: The level of algebraic understanding expected for success in the 11+ is often greater than that taught in schools. This course focuses on building these essential skills to a high standard.
Worded Problem-Solving: This is frequently the most challenging area for pupils. The course dedicates significant time to decoding and solving complex word problems, which helps bring together new topics and algebraic skills.
Embedded Learning & Retrieval Practice: Purposeful homework is set each week to consolidate learning. This strategic practice uses spaced repetition to revisit topics, locking knowledge into long-term memory and building the connections between concepts that are vital for 11+ success.
The course runs online for two and a half terms, from November of Year 5 through to July. This timeline ensures pupils are thoroughly prepared and confident for the mathematics component of their 11+ exams.
Online sessions are held weekly via Zoom for one hour. Every session is prepared and delivered by Mr Armitage, who brings his experience as the Head of Mathematics at a top independent London school, where he oversaw a diverse mathematics programme and the 11+ entrance examinations.
During each live lesson, pupils are introduced to new concepts through worked examples and interactive teaching. To support this, all pupils receive a subscription to Atom Learning, widely recognised as the premier online platform for 11+ preparation (an annual subscription ordinarily costing £480). Mr Armitage uses this tool to set targeted homework that directly reinforces the weekly lessons and ensures a continuous, effective learning journey between sessions. After each session, a one hour compulsory homework is set, alongside a further 2 hours of recommended work. (Note that with Access to Atom Learning, pupils can also prepare for the English and non-Verbal Reasoning exams).

The course is designed for pupils preparing for the GL, ISEB, CSSE, and FSCE examinations. It also provides significant value for candidates applying to independent schools with bespoke entrance tests. To best support these pupils, parents are requested to notify Mr. Armitage of the school(s) applied for, enabling him to assign specifically targeted work.
-
In half term 1 and 2, pupils begin by learning the content essential for the 11+ exam which will not have been taught in schools by the time they take the exam. This includes advanced sequences, compound shapes, advanced percentages, ratio and statistics.
In half term 3, pupils are introduced to algebra, a topic many find tricky and is ordinarily only taught in schools in Year 6, after pupils have taken the 11+
In half term 4 and 5 pupils master worded problems across all topics, including number, geometry and algebra.
-
Year 5 pupils should dedicate 3–4 hours per week to maths preparation outside of school lessons.
Mr Armitage’s online course is highly structured to ensure consistent progress. Mr Armitage sets a program of tailored work through the online platform, Atom Learning, which adapts and grows with each pupil's unique journey. This includes a compulsory weekly homework based on that week's online class content and Recommended supplementary work to reinforce and extend learning.
This structured program continues throughout the entire academic year, including weeks without live lessons and school holidays, ensuring every pupil is fully prepared for the Mathematics component of their 11+ exam.
-
As a core part of the course, all pupils are set up with a subscription to Atom Learning, a premium online platform for 11+ preparation in Maths, English, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Mr Armitage sets targeted homework each week through this system. The homework serves two key purposes: it reinforces the content from the live lesson, and it strategically revisits topics covered earlier in the year. This approach utilises the 'spacing effect,' a proven method for locking knowledge into long-term memory and building the connections essential for maths mastery.

Parents are given direct access to their child’s Atom Learning account. The platform’s parent dashboard provides a clear overview of your child’s mastery level for each topic, completion rates, and performance data. For any questions or if anything is unclear, parents are always welcome to reach out to Mr Armitage directly for further insight.

Whilst it will be most beneficial for pupils to learn in a structured weekly session, we all know that there are reasons why one week might be impossible. For that reason, all lessons are recorded and can be emailed to you after the session, upon request.
