TMUA
The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is almost certainly the most significant exam a pupil sits before their A Levels. GCSEs and predicted grades somewhat influence whether a student will be invited for interview, but the TMUA offers universities the most recent data from a very hard paper where everyone is on a level playing field, and so it is the TMUA result often determines the outcome.
The TMUA is required for applicants to Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science at institutions including Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, and — from 2027 entrants — Oxford. Its sister exam, the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test), shares an almost perfectly overlapping Mathematics 2 paper, making TMUA preparation equally valuable for aspiring engineers and scientists.
Universities rely on these admissions tests as one of the only objective data points available to distinguish between applicants. At a time when most candidates apply with a sea of 8s and 9s at GCSE and A* predictions across all their A Levels, the TMUA provides the hard, comparative data that selection committees need. The competition is fierce, and it has become even more intense following Oxford’s decision to adopt the TMUA for 2027 entry onwards. This means preparation must begin earlier than ever just to have a running shot on an international playing field — which is the reality of applying for these courses.
Mastering the TMUA takes months of deliberate practice and preparation. The mathematics is genuinely hard, but it is also fun. Pupils who enjoy playing around with A Level maths at a much higher level will find the process deeply rewarding. The questions demand creative problem-solving, not just rote application of formulas.
Mr Armitage led TMUA preparation at a top independent school during his time as Head of Mathematics, where he guided countless pupils into the most competitive university courses. He now offers dedicated support either one-to-one or in small groups, designed to bolster each pupil’s chances of securing that crucial interview invitation.
